“Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.” Psalm 100:2

Martin Luther wrote, “The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to human beings to let us know that we should praise God with both word and music, namely, by proclaiming the [Word of God] through music.”

And this is what the True Life Church Choir does – minister to the congregation through music.

The choir practises every Sunday after Worship Service. It is an hour of rigorous practice and joyous singing.

The choir is open to baptised regular worshippers who love to sing, who want to use God’s gift of voice to encourage His children and who are willing to make the commitment to serve in the music ministry.

Besides ministering to the Chinese Congregation with spiritual songs, the Chinese Choir sings at Worship Services from time to time and on special occasions such as Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Church Anniversary, Christmas and Chinese New Year. To prepare for these presentations, the choir meets at 12:30 p.m. in Room 604 after the Sunday Worship Service for practice.

Preparation of the heart is also very important. John Calvin said, “it is necessary to remember that which St. Paul hath said, the spiritual songs cannot be well sung save from the heart”. To prepare our hearts, we invite our Pastor to give us a short exhortation based on the theme of the hymn we are going to present. This is done before our final rehearsal on the day of presentation. Through this, choir members glean precious doctrines from the hymns.

We welcome Church members seeking an area of service to join the Chinese Choir. Do not worry if you cannot read Chinese characters well. We append Han Yu Pin Yin (汉语拼音）to the lyrics to help you read and pronounce.

Our ensemble comprises string and woodwind instruments. Having learnt to play these instruments, we are happy to use our musical gifts to serve the Lord.

We practise with the Church Choir for special occasions such as Good Friday, Easter, Church Anniversary and Christmas. We also play the Introit and accompany the organist for the hymns sung by the congregation.

We welcome baptised regular worshippers to join us. If you are gifted with musical talents or have a passion for playing a string or woodwind instrument, we would love to have you on board. The Lord may use your musical gifts to glorify Him and edify the saints.

The piano is the main musical instrument used in our Worship Services. We have a team of pianists who are rostered to play in the English, Filipino and Chinese worship services each week.

Pianists have an important role in worship. Playing with reverence and maintaining a balanced tempo and volume encourages the congregation to reflect on the words of the hymn and join in singing praises to the thrice-holy God with understanding.

“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and they faithfulness every night, Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.” (Psalm 92:1-3)
